Edson Chagas (b. 1977, Luanda) is an Angolan artist whose research aims at reframing the circulation of objects, images and identities across cities and histories. Living between Angola and Portugal, he studied in Luanda, Lisbon and London and holds a degree from the University of Wales. Chagas was awarded the Golden Lion for Angola’s national pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013) for his series Found Not Taken, later presented at Zeitz MOCAA. Recent recognition includes the Smithsonian’s African Art Award (2018) and a shortlist for the Novo Banco Photo Award (2015). Solo exhibitions include Kunst Haus Wien; Instituto Camões, Luanda; Belfast Exposed; Memorial Dr. António Agostinho Neto; and Stevenson (2014, 2019). His work has featured in Malta Biennale (2024), Tate Modern’s A World in Common (2023), the Hamburg Triennial (2022), FotoFest (2020), MoMA (2015), and The Divine Comedy (2014–15), among others.
