ART X Lagos was born from a belief in the expansive power of the arts: the ability to affirm dignity, deepen our understanding of self, and shape how we imagine the future. The X in our name speaks to this multiplicity—art in its many forms, and the encounters it enables across exhibitions, dialogue, film, music, learning, and the lived experience.
Our unflinching belief is embodied by the artists, architects, educators, and thinkers who shaped Modernism in Nigeria. At a moment when foreign ideas were often valued above local histories and traditions, they returned to the cultural memory, knowledge, and aesthetic intelligence held within their history. Their work was not a retreat into the past, but a means of reinterpreting the past—translating it into recognisable yet new forms that spoke powerfully to their present.
The question that launched a cultural renaissance in the crucible and aftermath of independence remains as vital and compelling. How do we draw on the histories that shape us and use them to help move us forward? As ART X Lagos enters a new chapter and a new decade, it considers this through acts of bridging: between past and present, tradition and contemporary practice, local knowledge and international exchange, established voices and the next generation.
