ABOUT
No Work, No Creativity is a solo exhibition by Adewale Uthman that brings together a compelling body of mixed-media works tracing his creative evolution, one that moves fluidly between discipline and delight, structure and freedom, work and rest. Rooted in acrylic, ink, fabric, and found materials, Uthman’s practice is as much about process as it is about product. The tactile richness of his materials reveals an artist deeply connected to both his craft and his surroundings.
For Uthman, No Work, No Creativity is more than a statement; it is a philosophy of living and making. Over nearly three decades of consistent practice, he has built a foundation grounded not in fleeting inspiration but in the steady rhythm of labour. Every brushstroke, stitch, and layer of fabric affirms his belief that creativity is nurtured through persistence rather than chance.
Across this series, Uthman explores themes that mirror the human experience: Foundation, where skill and vision take root; Livelihood, a tribute to the diverse labours that sustain us; Beauty, an ode to the strength and elegance of women; Weekend Relaxation and Family Vacation, reflections on balance and restoration; Eyo and Carnival, vibrant celebrations of cultural pride and collective spirit; and Story Story, where memory and imagination intertwine through the oral traditions that shaped his early wonder.
Together, these works form a visual rhythm, a dialogue between the ordinary and the extraordinary. They remind us that creativity does not arise from idleness or silence, but from the continuous act of doing: working, reflecting, celebrating, and remembering. Through this exhibition, we witness not just what Uthman creates, but the enduring spirit that drives him to create.
