Portraits of Modernity

This live photography studio invites fairgoers to become co-creators of a new archive that honours the past, celebrates the present and envisions the future.

Inspired by the work of J.D. ’Okhai Ojeikere, whose iconic portraits documented Nigeria’s sculptural hairstyles and cultural landscapes, the activation continues in this tradition. Ojeikere sought to capture beauty, to create archives that outlive any individual and stand as testaments to what once was. His images were portraits of modernity, and this weekend, we reimagine that tradition for today.

Designed to resemble a 1960s Lagosian garden, the studio features the striking Patewo chair from Salu Iwadi Studios, which, like Ojeikere’s work, celebrates the sculptural beauty of Nigerian hairstyles. Visitors are invited to step forward into the future while keeping one foot in the past, embodying the spirit of timeless transformation.

With drop-in sessions by Lagos based photographer Peter, John Chukwu this studio is a visual celebration of self-fashioning, heritage and contemporary African identities. Like Ojeikere, Peter’s work blends commercial assignments with personal projects that capture intimacy and depth. He has photographed for iconic brands such as GIDA, Lisa Folawiyo, Patta x Nike and IAMISIGO, while his personal projects have been featured in PhotoVogue and Nataal and exhibited at the 2022 Palm Photo Prize.

Drop in or use your best self portraits to become part of a living archive of beauty and grace.
